What Is a TFN Number?

A TFN (Tax File Number) is a unique nine-digit number issued by the Australian Taxation Office. It connects you to the tax and superannuation system in Australia. This number stays with you for life, even if you change jobs or move houses.

You need a TFN for:

Starting a new job
Paying the correct amount of tax
Opening a bank account
Accessing your superannuation

If you don’t provide a TFN, your employer or bank may tax you at the highest rate, which can be up to 47 percent. Applying early helps you avoid losing money.

How to Apply for a TFN Number Online?

You can apply for your TFN online through the official ATO website: ato.gov.au.
Once you’re on the site, search for “Apply for a TFN.” You’ll see a few different categories. Here are the three most commonly used ones.

1. Australian Residents
This option is for Australian citizens and permanent residents.
If you are in Australia on a temporary visa or you are an expat, this option is not suitable for you.

2. Australian Residents or Permanent Residents (without passport)
This option is also for Australian residents or permanent residents, even if they do not hold an Australian passport.
However, the application is not fully online. You start the form online through Australia Post, but then you need to print it, take it to an Australia Post office, and show your identity documents in person.

3. Permanent Migrants and Temporary Visitors
This is the most common option for expats arriving from overseas.
If you hold a working visa, student visa, working holiday visa, or you are simply living and working in Australia, this is the option you should choose.

What You Need for Your TFN Application?

Before beginning the form, have these details ready:

Your home address or postal address (the ATO will send your TFN letter there)
Your passport details
If you have a spouse, their family name and date of birth

After submitting the form, your TFN will usually arrive by mail within around 28 days.

Can You Start Working Without a TFN?

Yes, you can.
Most employers will ask for your TFN when you start, but if you haven’t received it yet, you can tell them you have already applied. They can mark your payroll status as “awaiting TFN,” which allows you to start working straight away. You just need to provide your TFN once it arrives.

When Should You Apply for a TFN?

The best time to apply is as early as possible. Ideally, apply before starting your job or even while you are beginning your job search.
